  • A German composer of the Romantic era
  • Composed works for piano and orchestra, many Lieder, 4 symphonies, an opera, and other choral, orchestral, and chamber works
  • Examples of his works are Kinderszenen, Album für die Jugend, Blumenstück and Albumblätter
  • He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1943 for "A Free Song" and again in 1985
  • In 1840, he married pianist Clara Wieck
  • Schumann was confined to a mental institution (at his own request) for the last 2 years of his life
