  • A German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period
  • Grandson of Philosopher Moses Mendelssohn
  • Founded the Leipzig Conservatoire (now the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig)
  • Most famous works include incidental music to "A Midsummer Night's Dream", the oratorio "Elijah," the "Hebrides" overture and violin concerto.
